An object in motion will stay in motion unless acted on by an external force. Translation, “If you don’t hit the brakes on time, you keep on going, until that external force is applied for you.”

The link above is a famous picture from 1895 in France, but the laws of physics don’t change, and the same thing could happen today. News bulletin: Dateline March 24, 2014. A train in Chicago approached the end of the line too fast, operator was tired, train jumped track, and started to go up an escalator.
