All arches aren’t “Arch Shaped!”

Some arches are flat and are known as flat arches or jack arches.  They are commonly used as lintels over windows in old masonry structures and serve the same purpose as curved arches, i.e., they distribute the weight over an opening to the sides of the structure.  For a more detailed discussion and pictures, go to:
